I'm new- Wellbutrin

Sat, 05/24/2014 - 09:02

Hi everyone! I'm new here- I'm trying to look for some direction. On Wednesday I had my first seizure ever. I was on 450 mg. of Wellbutrin which they're sure triggered the seizure. The day after the seizure, they did an EEG and there were still spikes. My question is- if there's Wellbutrin still in my body, would that cause the spikes, or did the Wellbutrin uncover a medical condition we didn't know I had?

I'm now on Keppra and wondering how I'm going to get through the next 6 months without driving. :P

Hi and welcome to the club Wellbutrin might have cause the seizures. The EEG is showing spikes, Spikes are abnormalities (seizure activity). The eeg does not know anything about your medications. The EEG reads only the electrical activy in your brain. It does take some time for all the medication to get out of your system. That said the spikes are not due to the medication. Also know that if you have had more then 1 seizure you can be given a diagnosis of epilepsy. The spikes show where in the brain the activity is comming from. By knowing that they can look closer at that area of your brain to see if anything is not normal. In my case they found scar tissue. As for Keppra. It is the best medications I have ever been on in the 50+ years I have been living and dealing with epilepsy. Keppra has shortened the length of time in the seizure and time to focus (get back to normal). It has reduced the number of seizures.  You did not post the amount of keppra and if it is to be taken 2 times a day or it is ER (extended release). Unless your neurologist stated when to take it please by all means take youe dosages 12 hours apart. Your neurologist should set up and appointment in a few months to find out how you are doing on the keppra. Generally your dosage might be too low and that is becasue too much ,edication is just as bad an too little. Dosages can be raised and lowered with little problems. There are side effects but they generally go away after your body gets used to the medication whether it is keppra or any other medication. I would also suggest you get the My Epilepsy Diary. It can be found on this site hover over the get help section and look at the right side I believe it is the second down. By using it your neurologist can see the number of seizures you had. He can also see the times you took your medication late. It has teh number of seizures you had and more information. He can pull up the graphs and check everything out. The more information he has the better he can help you get seizure free.  I would suggest you get the My Epilepsy Diary which is locaked on this site. It can be found by hovering over the get help section/ It is then on the right side the second down. They have a video watch it and use the diary.  If you give your neurologist permission to use it he might come up with other things that can help. As for your first seizure ever. Anybody and I mean just that ANYBODY cna have epilepsy at any age. If someone was knocked out in a accident of any kind they can have epilepsy. A blow to the head caused mine. the blow cause a hemmorage to the brain which caused scaresd brain tissue that scared tissue is what cause my epilepsy. As for the 6 months without a DL. Your neurologist did what is required by LAW. If you go 6 months without a seizure you can get your license back. In other words Satae laws require a restriction which is released after a certain period of time. Each and every state has a time limit and they are not the same time limit. I hope this helps and you get seizure free Joe
