I think the doctors are wrong!!

Thu, 07/12/2007 - 20:26
For the past year I have been experiencing facial/tongue twitches, muscle spams/pain, & joint pain. I ignored all of this because I had no health coverage at the time amd prayed it would just go away. This past March I had a series of seizure while at work in R.I. I was kept for observation for about 24 hours , had a CAT scan & EEG which both were abnormal, and then released with the diagnoze of new onset seisures with untermined cause. I was able to obtain healthcare coverage through the state of M.A., now seeing a general practioner and neurologist. An MRI was also ordered which also came back abnormal. I have been telling them about my occuring symptoms that have been happening for months plus new ones and how they are getting worse since the seizures started. The answer to this was to up the dose of my meds.(Keppra), which has left me an emotional wreck. They keep telling me it is epilepsy, but I think they are wrong!! I am frustrated and want answers but feel I am being dismissed and underminded. I do not know what to do.

All of those abnormal tests along with your symptoms, especially the abnormal EEG, most certainly mean that you have Epilepsy. EEGs rarely produce false positives. There are many people who are diagnosed with Epilepsy even without abnormal tests. If you want to be certain, then arrange for a doctor who specialises in epilepsy to read your EEG and give you a second opinion. Sometimes it is helpful to write a list of questions for you to ask your doctors. You didn't explain why you don't think that you have epilepsy. Just so you know, epilepsy justs means that you have had more than one unprovoked seizure. Check out this link to learn more. http://www.epilepsy.com/101/101_epilepsy.html I'm sure this is a very scary diagnosis! Looking around this website, joining a support group, and learning as much as you can will help.

I appreciate Calpurnia_98 I'm not the first in the world to agree experts do not always get results right, or feel test results might not always be the most reliable method of diagnosis. I appreciate and can see why the need to want to feel the test results could have been better than they were, and want to 'fix' them? I don't mean to sound harsh, or less than understanding in saying the above... I appreciate you may feel that your world has been turned upside down and why. I can see the appeal (who wouldn't) in wanting a life that is as normal as possible. As I can being listened to and why. God knows a listening understanding ear sure goes a long way... Just at times circumstances are such that is not possible when everything seen so far about your test results disputes that. It helps if you process this. Try and relax if you can, go see a movie or take a walk? SunflowerPower suggested you joining a support group-a good idea for talking does help. What is also helpful is to ask questions-even if that means writing them down before you go visit. Can I suggest that you do some reading research of your own if you have not already? Then when you do go talk to whoever you need to and arrange further testing in deciding on a second opinion, the better informed you will be. Hang in there, stay positive and upbeat — it helps. Cat.

Dear Calpurnia_98 There are other things that can show abnormal results on ct,mri and eeg if you feel that its not epilepsy. Is the anticonvulsant medication stopping your symptoms?
