I didn't have seizures for 10 months?

Mon, 01/18/2016 - 14:09

I am having the medication called trileptal. I had seizures after about 4 months, so doctor said, "increase it!." So I did. Seizure happened again after 10 months.... It is good that I'm gradually improving, but I want to stop this thing forever. And every single time I ask the doctor about the solution, all he/she says is to increase the amount of medication. That's all they know what to say.

And who knows, they may be right. I'm somewhat improving, but I'm scared that the doctor just keeps increases it and my seizure doesn't stop. And I'm so confused how you become seizure free. Nothing happened to me for 10 months ever. I thought I would be seizure free WITH medication. It's almost a year and doctor said I have no worries. They lied.....

a person can go a long time

a person can go a long time without a seizure and have one. I went 3 years without one. It takes time to get the right medication and dosage set. Which means they need to wait for at least 3 months after an increase to see if that dosage is working right. As Amy Jo posted each person is different so the dosages and medications are set at certain levels to start with. Seizure medications are not like aspirin where once it is taken it is gone after a few hours. It takes 2-4 weeks for the therapeutic levels to build in your body.. You went from a seizure after 4 months to one after 10 months the increase could take it to a year or longer. Understand as your body changes tha changes affect your medication therefore dosages may need changes. Body changes can be weight hormonal or other changes. I had to have dosage changes 4-5 times in less then a year because I was changing from a little kid to a teen. Grew 8 inches in height and gained 50 lbs. 10 months seizure free is great so work with your neurologist. Understand he wants you seizure free too. I have a cousin that whent years without a seizure but she had some recently because of something that happened medically. Is she upset? No the issue causing her seizure is being taken care of. Am I happy I still have a seizure every 8-14 days NO. The reason is my seizures today are nothing like they were in the mid 60's. I have hated taking medications all my life. But I take them daily all the time because I know what will happen if I don't. Without know when you were diagnosed I only know that you went longer after the dosage change. I have only been living and dealing with epilepsy and seizures for 50+ years. I have tried most of the medications out. They all work but I wanted better control. Procedures are out but Doc has checked and they wont work on me. Surgery is also helping many people. But it is not an option for me since the scar tissue causing my epilepsy is in more then 1 lobe of my brain. I have never driven but hey public transportation works. Jobs are there and I have had many. I was part owner of a small business so I do know people with epilepsy can do almost everything anybody else can do. All they have to do is use common sense. I hope this helps and you get seizure free Joe
