Hospital and physician recommendations?

Fri, 07/10/2015 - 21:43
My dad had a brain hemorrage 21 months ago and has suffered seizures for about a year, uncontrolled by medications (Keppra, Lamictal, Topamax, and others). He has seizure activity that lasts for several hours in addition to intense seizures lasting 2-5 minutes. He lives in a small town in Indiana and we would like to find a stroke research center for care. Does anyone have experience with Mayo, Cleveland Clinic or others?

welcome to the clubA hemorhage to the brain can cause epilepsy. That hemorhage can and brobably did cause scared brain tissue. You posted he has beenon several medication in the last 21 months. You posted 3 different medications and others. Now medications for epilepsy are not loke asprirn where when you take it it is gone after 4-6 hours. It takes 4-6 weeks for the dosage to get set in your body which means you may have side effects while your body gets used to the medication. If he was still having some seizures then that dosage could be increased or decreased which would take about 2 weeks. So by changing medications too fast is not a good thing. Been there done that at times. He has longseizures which I used to have and yes it does take time for his body to get adjusted again. For me it too 30 minutes to 2 hours at times depending on the seizure. The question I have is for you what is controlled? If it no seizures what so ever? Is it a seizure now and then? I still have seizures now and then so I can be considered uncontroled. Both Doc and I know that I probably will never be completely controlled (no seizures what so ever) But by working with me and me trusing him and discussing medications and procedures together we have gotten my seizures down to seconds in length and the time to get back to normal is also in seconds.Which means I could have one while discussing something with you and you wouldn't know I had one. That would mean the seizures I posted up there ^^^^ are now seconds and people know nothing about them. I have a seizure every 6-12 days so I can consider my epilepsy controlled. The first medication you posted Keppra is one of the medications I use. It isn't just the medication that works it is how and when it is taken. If taken 2 times  a day then thisedosages need to be 12 hours apart. and the same time every day. If it isn't it can cause a breakthru seizure, Both of the hospitals you posted are good for epilepsy but stroke I am not sure. My questions would by why a place for strokes when it is his epilepsy causing his seizures?? You can go to the get help section and find a doctor or center there, I hope this helps Joe
