High Calorie Shake for Topomax Weight Loss

Thu, 07/26/2007 - 14:57
I just wanted to share a tool I learned this past winter to assist with weight gain, or stablization, while on Topomax. My 17 y.o. daughter, who is 5'6" and on Topomax, went from 120 pounds down to 104 and ended up in the hospital with influenza B, very weak and emaciated. The one thing we tried that worked was a shake recipe used for chemo patients that my dr. gave me. I choose to use organic, whole foods without chemicals with the exception of the Carnation Instant Breakfast. I am sure there is a healthy substitute, I just have not looked yet. There is so much to think about and try to manage. Anyway, here is the recipe. Here it is: 6 scoops organic ice cream full pkg of Carnation Instant Breakfast 1/4 to 1/2 cup "Egg Beater" type liquid 2 TBSP Whey Powder (I use the "NOW" brand) 2 cups organic whole milk 1/2 cup organic whole milk yogart vitamin powder (I use "All ONE" available at Vitamin World) I make this in the morning. It makes a quart and I serve her 8 oz. at a time throughout the day. If there are allergies or sugar issues you can substitute alternate ingredients. She is now up to 116-118 pounds. I try to help her choose healthy calorie-dense foods that are chemical free. She never seems to be very hungry, especially if she is having seizures, but does have favorites that I try to keep on hand to "tempt" her with. I find that many times we have to make choices based on what's going on at the moment. I hope this may help some of you who struggle. I actually made a sugar-free version for my father who is a diabetic after he had pneumonia and lost 20 pounds this past winter. It helped him as well. Take care and "Cheers." bygrace11
