Has anyone with Epilepsy attempted Lasik Eye Surgery?

Sun, 04/08/2007 - 20:47
Hello, I had been contemplating having corrective eye surgery prior to my diagnosis. Now I'm rethinking it because of the lights involved and what not I'm afraid I would have a seizure at the time, since light variations really set me off. I haven't asked my neuro yet, but I was wondering if anyone had any personal experiences. Thanks Heather B.

I had Lasik done in 1998, and wasn't diagnosed with seizures until just recently. My best guess is that I've been having them on a regular basis since the 1970s. Anyway, I don't have convulsions, and the Lasik wasn't a problem. I was very relaxed with the Valium they gave me before the procedure. They do clamp your head in place and tape your eye open so that you can't move during the procedure. Oh, and it didn't hurt, just in case this description gives you the creeps. There are some lights that pulse, but it's not as strong as a strobe light at a concert. If I were you, I'd definitely check with not only your neurologist, but also with the doctor who would be doing the Lasik surgery. I'd much rather know in advance if there could be a problem, than to find out during the procedure. Also, the doctor performing the Lasik has a right to know what he/she is dealing with, don't you agree? Deb

Hi there I wanted to have the laser treatment done but the laser place I went to said their surgeon would not do the eye surgery on me because I had not been 2 years free of having a Grand Mal seizure. If I was, they would have done it. If it's the lights that set you off, then you are better off speaking to your Neuro and the professionals in the laser clinic about this before you go ahead. Good luck!
