Had my first seizure

Mon, 08/31/2015 - 17:14

I'm new here, and have been reading through this forum the last day or two.  Two days ago I experienced something I've never went through before, and I had some questions.

I guess I'll start with what happened - I was sitting in a waiting room, and to let you know, I hadn't slept in about 48 hours at this point (I have an anxiety problem and sometimes I just can't sleep or eat, it sucks, I also had no food in my stomach either).  It was just after I had walked in and when I saw that there were around 5 people there already I sort of got frustrated because I hate waiting.  So I sat down.  Shortly there after, I started what felt to me was an anxiety attack coming on, probably due to not eating for a day and not sleeping, and I thought I was going to pass out so I sort of put my head on my lap.  Next thing I know, there are 2 paramedics in front of me asking me if I can move my hands, etc and that I had a seizure, that's really all I can remember until I got to the hospital, where they ran a TON of tests, hooked up to eeg/heart monitor machines, brain scans, blood tests, etc..luckily I live in Canada lol.  Everything turned out fine.

I've passed out because of anxiety before but have never experienced anything like that.  My mother has epilepsy, so I really hope this isn't something that's going to be recurring, and I'm not sure if it's genetic or not, but I'm 33 years old right now and I've read that this usually starts at a much younger age.  It's two days later and I'm still experiencing weird effects so I wanted to see if they were normal or not.

Right now I have really bad muscle pain ALL over my body.  It's painful to get up in the morning, and todays even worse than yesterday which was the day after I had the incident.  I'm guessing it's because of the muscle spasms, but just wanted to make sure.  The second thing is that my sight and hearing is off.  My eyesight is getting better, but sometimes it's hard to read text, like there are blank spots or something, or I have to rub my eyes.  it's hard to explain.  My hearing is really weird, it feels like I can hear BETTER than I could before, but again, it's really weird, that's not a good explanation, sort of hyper-sensitive.  I used to do ecstacy when I was a lot younger, and it was like that, if anyone here's done it they'll know what I mean.  The worst thing about all of this is my anxiety, which is usually very managed and I barely notice it, is totally amped up because now I just overanalyze whenever I'm in a situation and feel it coming on that I'm going to have another seizure, so it's pretty overwhelming to do every day normal things.

How long does this stuff take to go away, if it even totally does?  Is there something I can do to help my situation?  I see every day my mother and what she goes through (she has multiple tiny ones while she's talking and such, that I don't even think she notices), and I've seen her have countless grand mal seizures and it's a horrible thing to have to even see, especially when it's someone you love.

I hope I've explained things, and I've learned a lot from reading these boards.

Thank you all, and God Bless

Scott

Well I'll put it this way.

Well I'll put it this way. Anybody at any age can get epilepsy. True most types of epilepsy start in childhood or older people. There are many causes but for many they haven't found the cause yet. The tests used most are the EEG and MRI. The EEG shows the electrical output coming from your brain. What starts a seizure is an electrical impulse hitting wrong in the brain. The seizure itself is a chain reaction cause by the wrong hitting impulse. The MRI shows the brain as it is in your body. The neurologists will look for any abnormalities in the EEG. If there are any then the neurologists with look closer in that area of the brain to see if anything is different. They found scar tissue I mine. In others there may be a tumor or a deformed cell. The neurologists did find the cause of my epilepsy. I have scared brain tissue. The scar was caused by a hemorrhage to the brain. That hemorrhage was caused by a blow to my head which knocked me out for a few seconds. It happened when I was 6-8 YOA.As for the stuff to go away.... That would also depend on if you are having seizures you don't know about. Yes there are people who have seizures they aren't aware of. I had petite mal and focal seizures for about 2 years before I had my first grand mal seizure. Petite mal and focal seizures look like the person in them is daydreaming. But a person can have nocturnal seizures which can be small and not know it. With each seizure there is an energy drain and a loss of energy makes one tired.Do get yourself checked out. The reason you aren't back up to your normal self might be because you are having other seizures. Tell your mother and ask her is her neurologist is good. If she has one that is good then by all means try and get her neurologist. I hope this helps and you do get the assistance you needJoe
