grand mal after fall

Sat, 01/24/2015 - 11:26

Recenty had open heart surgery.   Value replaced, fluid drainned, bypass of lad, wast h at home for about 8 days fell in bathroom and hit head and had two grand mal seizures.   Being told I cannot drive for 6 months.   Have hx of peti mal but have not had those for 27 years.  My job requires me to drive.  I cannot work if I cannot drive, but want to be safe.  Under the epilepsy foundation on  Missouri Driver Licensing LawsThe Department of Revenue, Driver's License Bureau has no set seizure-free period;   it Normally requires a person to be seizure free for 6 months. But  Each case is evaluate individually base.  Not sure what to do.  I do feel fine, they do have me on keppa.  It been one month, scheduled to go back to work in 2 weeks.  Please, take time to tell me what you think I should do.  I am alone and have no one to talk to.  Thanks

each state has time limits

each state has time limits without a seizure before a license is reinstated. Your neurologist can tell you what you need to know and how long you need to be seizure free.  As for the evalution yes cases are different but doctors are required to send information to the DMV for the license to ne reinstated. Which means your doctor has regulations which are part of the laws written by the state. So the state requires the information before the license gets reinstated. When I wanted my license the time period was 2 years and in most states today it is 6 months. A person can feel fine and be healthy and still have a seizure.  As for keppra it is becomming the go to medication for seizure control. Generally when someone is put on medications the doctor wants to see them in about 2-3 months to see if the medication is controlling the seizures. At that point he can make adjustments which would raise or lower the dosages to control them better. A medication for seizure control is not a one size fits all medication like asperin. It takes time to build the levels up in your body and time for your body to get used to the medication. I hope this helps and you get seizure free Joe
