Exercise and seizures

Wed, 12/06/2006 - 23:36
I have recently been having seizures that have seemed to be initiated by excercise. Especially cardio, like running on the treadmill. Its too bad because excercise is something that I like to use to get over feelings of being depressed. I don't get an aura or if I do its very quick, then I find myself waking up on the ground. I have very rarely heard anybody mentioning the fact that they get the bulk of their sezeires during excercise. Has anybody ever had their sezeires evoked by excercise, and if so are there any tips on any particular meds or ways to treat it? Thanks, Jim

Hi Jim, the only thing I can think of that might relate is that if, during exercise, you begin to hyperventilate, you could bring on a seizure. Hyperventilating tends to be a trigger for me, so I must watch it when doing strenuous exercise. Hey Jim, My doctor told me to be cautious of overexhurtion. Excercise, sports, active types of activities were always a norm for me until I was diagnosed with epilepcy. I have complex-partial seizures. Overexhurtion caused by excercise and other active type of activities can be a trigger for some people. I just do those things in increments now. So, maybe instead of a 45 minute workout I will cut it down to maybe 20-25 minutes. If there is a point during excercise where the episodes occur, for instance at times you excercise maybe 30 minutes into it, then maybe consider cutting back on the amount of time you excercise per interval. Hope that helps!

Hi, When I first worked I walked to work, my neurologist told me to work myself up one week at a time, one block each week and then jump on the bus. My doctor told me to walk at a slow pace and then go to the bus. Each week gradually go one block longer. I would walk a total of 2 miles to work every day. It took a lot of patience. It helped me in my work habits. In scheduling limits. It actually gave me more time in a way. I worked at a University and I needed to work. My boss noted how after a few months that my seizures seemed to be less. I had to take it slowly and patiently but it works. Traffic lights I made sure I walked with a crowd of people if I crossed the street. When I had activity of a seizure I was around people. That's how I did it. I hope this helps you that is how it helped me.
