Everyday Problems with Epilepsy

Sat, 06/07/2014 - 15:39

I am a student and want to write a paper (minimum 20-30 pages) about problems people with epilepsy have.

My own epilepsy is under control due to medication but I know I am lucky. Well, what are your everyday problems? Or in general?

Basically we have the same

Basically we have the same problems other people do.Do we have enough money. Why can't I find a job. You know the same problems the guy living next door has. Those would be the in general problems. Most people with epilepsy have problems becasue of the stigma. You might want to write about the stigma which has been around for more then 2 thousand years.  Remember they were trying to throw the deamons out.People with epilepsy were even burned to death. Even here back in the 1960's people with epilepsy were still being put in homes. Yup 'out of site out of mind'. In the 1970's there were still some states that wouldn't allow some people with epilepsy to get a marriage license. Most people need to look at the famous people we are associated with and the list is long. Some of the greatest minds in human history had epilepsy; Aristotle, Michaelangelo, Pyragathos, Isaac Newton, Vince Van Gogh, Lewis Carroll, Neill Young, Prince and Martin Luther King just to name a few. That does not include the one that were leaders of countries like Alexander the Great and others. You are asking questions as to what problems we are having. Could you have written about the problems you had while you were having seizures? I am old school and have lived and dealt with epilepsy for 50+ years. Other then the stigma we have problems other people do. Will you be asking a person with a heart ailment what his problems are? What about the person with diabeties? Or the person with cancer? Most people hear and know what they go thru and those ailments are accepted. Why can't we be accepted like the others? Could it be because those ailments have just been uncertain cause of death 2 thousand years ago so they didn't get the stigma?  Yes thse other ailments are known better but that is also becasue they were brought into the forefront by associations, This site is one of those associationns trying to get epilepsy in the forefront so we will be looked at in the same way as others. It has come a long way in the last 40 years. But much more needs to be done. Ask questions as to why are other ailments accepted more then ours and list them. You mgiht also include the disabilities that can be seen. Remember people with wheel chairs were looked at differently and those with hearing aids did to. Try and think of the issues yo uhad and how you overcame them. Being older we had no home computers and the internet wasn't even thought of so we dealt with issues you might not even think about. I hope your paper comes out and you get a good grade. If you do post it and tell us how it was. JoePS I am glad your seizures are controlled... Mine could be considered controlled since I have a a few a month. But both Doc and I would like to see if we can get those seizures down farther or possiably stopped all together.

feeling left out is a problem

feeling left out is a problem for me. I am a 22 year old college student and it's still hard fitting into the college lifestyle with so many triggers. I don't feel comfortable going clubbing due to strob lights, I am hesitate to drink alcohol because I don't know how it will affect my meds and no all-nighters. Which sucks because a lot of my friends want to pull all nighters for exams and I just can't do that. It's hard explaining it to them bc they don't know what it's like.
