Epilepsy or dissociation?

Wed, 04/20/2016 - 13:29
Epilepsy seizures or dissociation? I was diagnosed with epilepsy 14 year's ago(grand mal and petite mal seizures) I've been having weird symptoms for 4 years now and my neurologist can't seem to find out whats going on. Ive been experiences 3 symptoms. 1) terrible memory loss. I can't remember people / friends that i got together with about 10 times, memories of my younger childhood between 5-16 years of age its been hard for me to even make new memories. 2) every morning I wake up feeling like im going to have a petite mal seizure ( shakey/weak) it goes away in 30min-1hour. The weird part is that it happens even if i take a 1 hour nap. Every time I wakeup. 3) I've been feeling for about 4 year's now( same timeline as the other two symptoms) like I'm living in a dream. Like I'm watching myself live but not really being there? Almost like my life is just a dream. I've also noticed tunnel vision especially when driving. I don't drive because of how bad it is. I thought maybe itwas dissociation but my neurologist thinks its due to seizures? Does anyone have these symptoms if so could you share your experience and can give me advice? Thank you so much!

Your neurologist may be right

Your neurologist may be right. A person can have more then 2 types of seizures and types of epilepsy. When I was diagnosed there were no types of seizures or epilepsy. I was diagnosed with Grand Mal, Petite mal and Focal Motor epilepsy.  Tonic-clonic, absence and many of the other types. A lot of the things you posted are in different types of seizures,

do you know what I should be

do you know what I should be focusing on? My neurologist cant explain my symptoms and I'm not sure what I should be focusing on seizure/epilepsy wise. Do you have any of the symptoms I have?

Hi, this is what I'm going through also so I feel your pain.I apologize for length. Ive been experiencing these types of petite mal seizure my entire life (I'm 32 now) Nobody ever really noticed except me and just thought I had bad ADD. As Ive gotten older its been getting harder and harder to function. The problems lies in that it crosses the neurolohical realm to Psycholohical realm and both, that why its so hard to diagnosis correctly. For me my symptoms are random and I can't seem to track them, like they happen when Im having fun thinking about playing a game, being on a beach, or playing with my dog. All the sudden I'll start convulsing like a seizure, or I almost black out, but not completely. My brain shuts off and I can't talk move or think about anything. I dont feel afraid or in danger. I feel like I'm in lala land AlLL the time, I also have been having trouble reading, slurring words, and writing. I've had an MRI, eeg and veeg but have said Im not having seizures. @_@. However they think so far I have functional neurologic disorder and nonepileptic seziures, which can be caused by stress, trauma, or other medical conditions and your body doesnt know how to handle it. if its not trauma or stress they believe that its caused by malfunctiong of the nervous system. You can also hallucinate with an epileptic seizure too, which I have. Both of abuse and other random things but no explanation or real events. My doctors think it's like Dissociative Iddentity didorder and Ptsd but I dont think and feel the way that one should if I was traumatized. It effects me more on a cognitive level than emotional and fear based. I am waiting for approval for spinal tap, functional brain scan, amd an Seeg. Just know that just because regular tests dont show epileptic seizures, doesnt mean they are not happening. My docotor told me that some seizures are so deep in the brain that a typical EEG can't see. But push for a spinal, functional brain scan or seeg. To help better diagnosis you. :) hope this helps.
