Epilepsy Diagnoses and Driving/Working

Tue, 12/16/2014 - 00:09

I am waiting to hear back on an MRI and have an EEG scheduled for next month. I have been reading about people who have been recently diagnosed and have lost their drivers' license. I have never lost consciousness while having a "seizure" (if that's what they are). Does anyone know what the protocol is and what the likelihood is that I will not be able to drive for a time? Thank you in advance.

I am in Washington State.

A person can have seizures

A person can have seizures without losing conciousness. All seizures can last seconds or minutes and during that time period your reflexes are deffinately delayed. As for th loss of a drivers license. It does happen and it is due to laws. Each state has a time period that a person has to go thru without a seizure before they can get their license backFor those that think it is not their right  to have their license revoked they need to use common sense. Do you approve of someone driving and texting? Or using a cell phone? Since those 2 things can and do cause wrecks. Your tests can all come back normal but that too does not mean you don't have epilepsy of seizures. I had 20-25 different EEG's and all came back normal. But I fell asleep in one which showed abnormlities (seizure activity). The MRI of the 1960's (neuro-angeogram) was also normal until they looked closer at the neuro-angeogram and they saw scar tissue in the left lobes of my brain. The scar tissue causes a electrical impulse to go off wrong in the brain causing a chain reaction. The DMV is required to suspend a persons license if they have seizures. Doctors and hospitals have regulations that require them to notify offices because a person has a seizure and may have a drivers license. The regulations come from the law written to protect people. I have never had a license. I went 3 years without a seizure of any kind and the state required only 2 years and I was studying to get my license. I had a seizure so I didn't take the test. All it takes to diagnose epilepsy is 2 seizures. Like I posted a person can have a seizure and not lose conciousness. The seizures I have are focal seizures and simple partial seizures. I can have either of them while talking to you and you would know nothing about it. My PCP had askes a question and while i was answering him I had a delay in my answer. He thought I was trying to come up with the words before answering his question. He was aware that my new medications were helping but was amazed the seizures were that short since I had some in his office that were minutes long and it took 15-45 minutes to get back to normal. I hope this helps and youo get the assistance you need  Joe
