Epilepsy and mono?

Wed, 02/11/2015 - 13:36

Hello, I've had epilepsy (temporal lobe) for over ten years now and it is fairly well controlled.  I've had more seizures lately as I've just moved to a new country (the UK), and I've had more drug interactions with my medications (on one occassion I took an over-the-counter medication, and on another I took an antibiotic -- both which triggered a seizure.  I didn't have this problem of medicinal interactions back in the states, but I assume it is either the stress and/or different ingredients in the medications... this is a different mystery I still have yet to solve).

But my main question is this: On both occasions I had a complex partial seizure, though the recovery time has been incredibly long... now I'm going on my 4th day of being extraordinarily tired, and needing to sit in a dark room to avoid over-stimulation (I have a normal amount of energy, and then it plummets later in the day. I can't even read I am so tired).  It occured to me that this feels a lot like I did when I had mono (mononucleosis, or glandular fever in the UK), which I had 3 years ago.  I got mono at a time of intense stress during my graduate degree, and it recurred the following year at a similar time. I know that mono can reoccur, though I'm surprised since I'm not under nearly the same amount of stress as I was a few years ago.  Is it possible that mono could be triggered by a seizure?  Or even if the seizure I had this weekend triggered by a recurrence of mono?  Thanks!

I have had epilepsy for 50+

I have had epilepsy for 50+ years and any sickness can cause break thru seizures.  A sickness of any kind stresses the body which means even if you don't seem to have the stress you had at other times the sickness can cause enough stress to effect your medication levels. Seizures can drain energy which is probably why you are tired. I am no doctor but if it were me I would be calling the neurologist to varify or question the tiredness and if I could have a illness that may be slight like a small cold which might be causing slight seizures or partial seizures which many people don't think about.
