Epilepsy and Employment

Thu, 06/01/2017 - 13:03
I've had a job caring for adults with disabilities for 2 years, and I haven't had any problems with seizures, though I had a migraine a few months ago. Last week, out of nowhere, she said that she is concerned about me "being alone" with the residents, and so in order to keep my job I have to produce a letter from my neurologist proving that I can drive. I asked her why I needed to do this, since I haven't had any issues at all, and she answered, "there's no reason, it's just something I was thinking about and concerned that you might have a seizure with the residents in the car." I believe that this might be illegal -- since a new condition is being placed on my employment, though the only cause seems to be my supervisor's fear. There have been other issues -- she first discussed this with me by implying that I couldn't work there any more (and said "but I need to think about it some more"), then in thinking about it she discussed my medical history with a large group of people. All together I don't think she has a good grasp of how to treat employees with disabilities, and I'm tempted to fight it but don't know if it is allowable to make conditions on employment.
