Waiting for EEG results

Wed, 03/02/2011 - 22:47

Hi all. My almost 5 yr old granddaughter Jayla was diagnosed at 10 months with complex partial seizures. She has been on Keppra since and has had nothing other than occasional absence siezures with occasional night terrors. On her last overnight EEG she had no seizure activity. So the neuro said that maybe doesn't actually have epilepsy. Maybe she is just spacing out. HMMM. Not like I can have her spacing out for the rest of her life. He want's her to continue her meds though.

We are currently setting up with a new neuroolgist at a different hospital as her neuro wa suspended from his practice last month. We had a sleep deprivation EEG done on 2/24 at Childrens Memorial Hospital in Chicago and are wating for results of that before they will give us an appt with the new neuro.

Below is the results of the last 48 hr EEG that was done and it will be interesting to see how the new one differs. I don't know what it all means though so if anyone has any insight I would be most appreciative. This was a discharge summary and not the final report.

BACKGROUND ACTIVITY:Posterior background activity consisted of 8-9hz of 40-90 micro V, distributed in posterior head regions symmetrically. This activity was blocked with eye opening maneuvers. Overall, the posterior dominant rhythm appeared rhythmic and well modulated.

Beta:In anterior head regions there was a 15-20Hz, 10-20 microV fast activity distributed symmetrically.

Sleep: Stages I-iV of sleep were recorded. Stage II sleep was characterized by vertex waves and sleep spindles.

No photic stimulation or hyperventilation were performed.

INTERICTAL EPILEPITFORM ACTIVITY:A single, broad, right temporal (F8-T2-F12-T4-T6) sharp wave is seen (250uV) with maximal electronegativity and phase reversal over the right mid-temporal region (T4).

IMPRESSION & ACTIONS TAKEN:During this continuos video/EEG monitoring study, no clinical or electrographic seizures or habitual spells are recorded. A single sharp wave is seen over the right temporal region of uncertain clinical significance.

At 30 hrs, brief and rare right temporal slowing and left temporal slowing per Fellow's verbal report. Final continuous EEG read as mildly abnormal. Final report pending.

I never did obtain a copy of the final report.
