Surgery Recovery Time for 6 Year Old?

Thu, 12/16/2004 - 07:49

Hi Everyone...

My daughter is scheduled to have resective epilepsy surgery on December 30th, after two years post-encephalitis refractory seizures (we've tried ALL the meds, three at a time and nothing has controlled her seizures).  Her surgeon has told us that recovery time will not be that long, kids bounce back and she should be able to get back to her "normal" activities pretty quickly, but I would love to hear from other parents who have been through this.

I would just love to have a better idea of what to expect...my husband and I are so terrified and anxious (but also happy about the great possibility of fewer/no seizures)

My son turned 6 in October.  He had surgery in Sept.  He's doing great!  Recovery was quick, as soon as we got home from the hospital he improved dramically everyday.  I could see the progression the first month, it was amazing.  By the 2nd month he actually could have went back to school!  But I didn't, I kept him home w/a tutor coming to the house.  After 8 weeks I sent him back part time, two weeks later now he is in school full day.  I was actually more cautious then most, some parents send them back sooner.  I would be happy to talk more w/you.  Post your email if you would like.

Hi...thanks so much for your response.  I'm so glad to hear your son is doing so well.  I would love to talk to you some more about your experience...the closer we get to the surgery, the less sleep I'm getting.

I suppose there is no way to post my e-mail without making it public?

Well, sleep now!  It's so hard to sleep in the hospital and if you stay in PICU there is no sleeping at all.  They go there after surgery for at least 24 hours.  I have to say that I'm not the type that needs lots of support, but when it came to this I was so thankful to have people to talk to that went through it.  It made things so much easier for me, I really don't know what I would have done without them holding my 'e-hand'.  It's so hard when it's your baby.  billjen@hotmail.com
