Seizures without abnormal brain activity?

Sun, 02/27/2005 - 17:09

Hi. My mother has been having seizures daily for the past two years. She mostly gets them when she's stressed out, but I've seen her have them when lights flicker. Her doctor keeps telling her they're stress-related, and only once has there been any recorded abnormal brain activity. She's frustrated as she can't figure out why she's having the seizures. She feels like they're telling her that she's making them up. She has memory loss, numbness in her hands and feet and trouble swallowing as well. Any thoughts as to what might be going on?

I would you to email me stacy3675@yahoo.com I have complexmigrainsyndrome finally dignosed 2 months ago by a headache specialist in neworleans lousiania

I statrted exactly 2-12-04 mardi gras day last year where I was confused I had a migraine had urinated on myself the day before I woke on the floor I took that for low blood sugar because I am type 2 diabetic I was admitted into the hospital they told me I was having "stress" seizures I went to specialist I always would get a a pain first in my left side then a migraine then a seizure.

I finally saw a neuroligist who said they can come during your period or when your ovulating they don't have to be stress related a dr. who tells you that doesn't know whats going on.

she placed me on topamax a migraine preventive, very safe even my son who is 9 is on it. she started me on neurontin 300mg 3 x a day. and I have moved up to trileptal 1200mg 2x aday.god dont take dilantin or those other drugs they make you drowsy or ill.

I also take the depo prevo shot so I don't get my menstrual cycle ant more you take the shot every 3 months it is mainly used for birth control but even with my tubes tied this reduces your ovulating and hormones. unless your mom has had a hysterectomy. my migraines have greatly reduced.

I hope you email me because we sound so sim ilar their is a whole support group who was told they were stress related and guess they are all women.

a regular dr. can start topamax, like her gyn, but if she has a gyn I would ask about preventive drugs instead neurontin daily and topamax prevent seizures brought on by migraines, I would ask the dr why they haven't mentioned complex migraines could cause seizures since you say they can be brought on by flashing light so have I imitrex stat dose injection is something to stop a migraine once started it's important to keep on hand especially if you can stop a migraine you may prevent a seizure.

I may have confused you if I have I am sorry- stacy

Stacy,On your Complex migraine seizures do you lose consciousness? When My prev neuro said my "episodes" were complex migraines, they were emulating strokes. I would lose the left side of my body. I was placed on Topamax and Nortriptyline to prevent migraines. Unfortunately I am unable to take Imitrex due to hypertension. My episodes got worse and I started losing consciousness... progressing to daily seizures. My new neuros say they are actually seizures and not just migraines.I was told that with a complex migraine it mimics an atonic seizure where you go limp on one side and fall. Is that correct?Dayna
