Psychogenic nonepileptic seizures?

Sun, 02/27/2005 - 17:20
Most children at this age don't have "psychogenic seizures".  There may be some attention seeking or go manipulate a parent into "giving in".  Breath holding is a typical example, it's not epilepsy but it sure looks scary.

A few years ago, a little 4 year old girl came to our EMU with the diagnosis of absence seizures.  She had plenty of events, so I asked her about her seizures, I asked her if she could show them to me, and she did, she rolled her eyes up and blinked.  I asked her what happens when she does this, she replied " I go to the doctor and then to Mc Donalds".

Yes, this falls under the NES catagory but this isn't a psychogenic seizure.  If you haven't had a VEEG or AEEG for your daughter, this is the tool which will clarify whether or not what you are seeing is truely epilepsy or just a temporary behavior.  The "lethargy" you mention after the event sounds more like epilepsy than behavior to me.

I hope this helps.
