My husband was on Dilantin at age 18 and was seizure free for almost 3 years. Got put on a medication for partial complex when he has grand Mal about 3 years ago. Since than its been a downhill spiral. Started having one every 6 months, 4,5,now we are down to barely 2 years. Less than a year ago his new nuerologist put him on Keppra 2,000 mg(generic) and kept Vimpat. Well Friday he had a seizure while at his new job. He thinks that it might be hopeless and he will never get them under control. I'm still very hopeful. It's just so hard right now. Anyone else had trouble like this? I've begun to notice that it occurs in between when he takes his meds, (1st dose at 8am-8pm 2nd dose). This last one was worse because we had thought this was over. I don't know what to do. Any advice or similar stories will help. He's my best friend and I hate seeing him go through this.

Hello.  I was on Dilantin for 15 years (age 20 to 35) and only had 3 seizures during that time.  Then in the 15th year (2005) I started having about 5 a week Dilantin just stopped working.  After seeing an Epileptologist in 2010 he put me on 3000 mg. of Keppra (generic).  I had previously been put on VimPat.  We then went up to 4000mg. of Keppra when 3000 wasn't working but did get me to about 6 seizures a year. It would seem that your husband could increase the Keppra dosage.  I assume he is on 400mg of VimPat which is the normal dosage.  I would discuss your concerns with his doctor.  Is he seeing a general Neurologist or an Epileptologist?  He should at this time see a Epileptologist.
