Need ideas to get 3 1/2 year old nephew to take medicine, please.

Mon, 08/10/2009 - 18:45

My nephew, Riley is 3 1/2 and is about 2 1/2 years behind developmentally and in speech due to drop and absence seizures.

He has to take Depakote and Topamax twice a day; the medicines taste NASTY. Remember shock rocks the candy that "exploded" on your tongue or have you eaten a really sour candy and could not get the taste off of your tongue? That's how the medicines taste.

We have tried everything from hiding it in his food, drink, applesauce, slushies, cake icing, mac 'n cheese, grits, cereal, you name it, we've tried it.

We have used medicine syringes, eye droppers, spooning it in hidden in food; nothing works. We have to hold him and poke it down the back of his throat.

Despite taking the medicines, he is still having drop seizures lasting 1-2 seconds, as well as absence seizures lasting 1-2 seconds where he stares off in the distance for 5-10 seconds.

Any ideas or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Lynn
