My Friend Thought I Was Kidding About Having A Seizure

Sun, 05/26/2013 - 00:41
So I met up with an old friend of mine a couple of days ago and I just happened to mention to him that I had a seizure after I went to his concert. He didn't believe me at all. As usual, he doesn't pay any attention to what I have to say to him but he wants me to listen to him. I don't think that is right. IN ORDER TO RECEIVE RESPECT, YOU HAVE TO GIVE IT BACK. That was not the case. He said that he thought that I was kidding about having a seizure. Then, he asked me was I wrong for saying that. I looked him dead in his face and said, "Why would I play about having a seizure? Huh? I am not that type of person." And to answer his question I said no but I really was thinking a little bit of yes and no. Yes, because anything as serious as a seizure disorder you should take into account as a serious manner. And no, because of the fact that he was naïve to the entire situation and didn't know any better. This boy is almost 21 years old. I expect better out of him and now I am not so sure if I trust him to take me and my medical condition seriously. Can anyone shed some light on why some guys (or girls) act like that when someone tell them something as serious as a seizure disorder?

There are really people like that who treat friends as their counselor and psychologist. They don't want to listen to what we say even if we are serious and just talk about themselves all the time. I had a friend like that too and i stopped seeing her because i got tired from listening to her drama's.

He just may not be going through an immature phase and unable to handle this sort of thing at this time in his life.  I wonder if he has medical issues going on with himself or in his family, or other serious issues, that he is handling by joking around so that is how he treated your sudden bit of information.  Some people need more of a lead up to serious information like this, in the right place and the right time.  You know, a quiet time when you are alone and driving in the car, along the lines of "I have some information I'd like to share with you that I haven't told you about before", and if he starts to clown around at that point, wait for another time.  Why did you want him to know about the seizure?  Maybe he was interpreting it as his fault, took offense, and responded by joking.

He asked me why I left the concert so soon and that's when I told him about my seizure there. He knows about my seizures, he just forgets over and over again. One thing he doesn't know is as of right now I found out that loud noises and chaos is one of my triggers.
