Medic Alert. Police ignoring.

Sun, 11/28/2004 - 18:56
About 4 months ago now I had a seizure while driving. I hit a building. I woke up handcuffed in the back of a police car. I asked where I was. The officer told me I was drunk and had an accident. I told him "I don't drink, I had a seizure" and then lost consciousness again. I was wearing my "medic alert" bracelet it states "Epilepsy" Rather than taking me to a hospital I was put in a cell to "sober up". I asked for my medication, which was in my pocket, and was refused. When they finally let me go, after 8 hours and a breathalizer that came back Zero, I asked why did he have to put the cuffs so tight. It was because of how I was behaving. I'm sure most who read this post know basic first aid for seizures. 1) do not restrain 2) don't expect person to follow orders 3) do not withhold medication. Shouldn't our Police know this??? Medic Alert has recommended that I press charges. They tell me that the police are supposed to Respect Medic Alert Information. Especially if there is an ID Number. How many people wear a bracelet for 10 years and carry around anti-convulsants to beat a drunk driving charge??? Sorry this is so long. I am frustrated. I have a trial for this in 1 month. How many of you wolud file a complaint?? Thanks for you time. Stacey

I completely agree. I think it is outrageous that they ignored your Medic Alert bracelet. I hope you get appropriate satisfaction. You should probably talk to a lawyer for advice.

Hello everyone. What I'm about to tell you happens EVERY TIME, when I have a seizure. Take int oconsideration that my insurance will NOT cover me to go to another haospital (due to distance). Everytime that I have a seizure (whether someone is at my house with me or not - which if I'm alone, I find out later what happened), the paramedics NEVER read my bracelet (whenever I did have a seizure, it was my neighbor across the hallway from me, that would come over - from hearing my screaming during seizures). The paramedics ALWAYS ask her questions, and she tells them (the SAME paramedic people) that she doesn't know ANYTHING about me (which I don't like telling my neighbors about my epilepsy because they tend to stray from me because of it - this neighbor only will stay by me incase i stop breathing, but wants nothing else to do with me - she gets into my home by contacting our maintenance guy on the grounds). You'd think that they would be smart enough to read my bracelet. At the hospital (which my mom has actually witnessed this happening, SEVERAL times - I live alone with my little dog), even though I am incoherent and might look like I am able to respond, they constantly ask me questions (the doctors and nurses). My mom has tried to tell them that I am incoherent, and they tell her that they can tell that I just don't want to answer, and that I am fully awake and alert. Because my mom was constantly trying to get them to understand about my condition, they considered my mom to be an annoyance, and asked security to escort her to the waiting room. They even tried to give me a medication that I am allergic to (which would put me in a HUGE grand mal seizure - morphine). My mom did what I am SO proud of her for, she yelled and screamed that if they did NOT let her back into the emergency room to be with me, due to their mistreating me, that she would sue them. As she walked back into the room, she saw the doctors trying to give me morphine. Luckily she stopped them as they were about to put it into my arm. She yelled again at them, and told them that if they didn't believe her, they should call the medic alert number on my bracelet. They said that they didn't need to, because they are the licensed professionals and know what they are doing. Anyways, my mom stood by me EVERY step of the way, and she made sure they took better care of me. But NOW everytime I get sent to the hospital, they try to make me sign the release forms (knowing I'm incoherent - and they won't even let my mom sign for me), they just let me stay on the emergency room bed for hours until I sign, and then they make me pee in a cup, because of my supposedly being on drugs. My mom has complained to administration, but one hand covers the others over there. MedicAlert even sent them a video on what to do, and obviously they either threw it away, or put it aside and NEVER watched it. I talked to my mom (who lives in another state, but comes to vist as much as she can - I prefer to live alone for independence reasons), and one of my brother's who lives the next town over, and have decided to go to court to make it official, that my mom and brother have COMPLETE say so over my well being, incase I can't speak for myself. That way, if they pull that crap again, they can be fined or whatever. And everyone in the community HATES that hospital, because they misdiagnose EVERYONE. They told one woman, that after running tests on her, she obviously had a thyroid problem. I actually ran into her again MONTHS later at the emergency room, and she stormed into the area where the doctors and nurses were, and went to the doctor that diagnosed her. It was FUNNY! She said thanks for misdiagnosing me - here's my newborn thyroid problem that you diagnosed me with. She was pregnant, she did not have a thyroid problem. And she's in the process of suing that hospital and doctor because her baby had problems from the meds that that doctor prescribed while she was pregnant. And the SAME doctors and nurses work there. I can't believe it! These are SUPPOSED to be the people we rely on for help with our seizures. I actually feel like they treat us like we have AIDS. Those doctors and nurses, and paramedics, make it VERY hard for me to trust other professionals like them.
