amazinglucille,

First I want to say congradulations for your son being sz free for a year. Next, just hope to help by encouraging what your son is able to do right now. Think of the amount of time it's taken from when his szs started to when they've been under control, and compare it like being on the phone put on hold for the same amount of time. His age and body size is still on the typical time table, but his mind may no longer be 'put on hold on the phone' all this time.

Here's something I found online, bought, haven't finished reading yet, but brought it to another parent's attention and she let me know herself that it has been rather helpful, because she has a child with epilepsy too. It's a book titled "CHILDHOOD EPILEPSY: Language, Learning, and Behavioral Complications", by William B. Svoboda. Now it's not cheap, so you might want to look around, maybe check in libraries, but this is where I found and bought it.

Hope this can be helpful. Take care & good luck.

I too have just read “Childhood Epilepsy” and found it to be very helpful in understanding (in retrospect) what I went through with my son. He was misdiagnosed with Benign Rolandic seizures at age 9. Last year, after the VEEG. it was found , at age 18, that he has had Frontal lobe Epilepsy all this time. His acting out , language and educational problems were attributed to lack of self-control and parenting issues. It is such a relief to now know what we are really facing in his life. This book has helped me make sense of this condition. It is sometimes hard to read but the information is very empowering. I would recommend it to every parent who is facing epilepsy with their child.Good luck with your son. Any other recommended books ?Thanks to all on this site, it is very supportive.SMBF

Amazinglucile,My son has epilepsy. He is three. He has special therapy called ABA (applied Behavioral Analysis). It has done wonders. On top of his seizures, he has a diagnosis of autism. Many children with seizures fall into this category. If you can get him into a develpmental MD, and get a diagnosis such as autism or PDD, then the school system will have to give him special therapy. I know that autism sounds horrible, but sometimes getting the diagnosis is the best thing in the world b/c your child qualifies for so many services. If you have questions, you can e-mail me directly at aqmahoney@yahoo.com.- AmyQ
