Infant/Toddler seizures after Eating? (Help)

Thu, 03/31/2005 - 09:02

Ever since my son was old enough sit up and be spoon-fed he would occasionally have, what I know wonder is, a seizure.  I have never noticed him to have one out side of his highchair (until today, IÂ’ll explain later) It doesnÂ’t happen right away, it seems to happen after he has eaten a little bit or completely finished. This is why I focus so much on it being eating induced, but I could be wrong.  When he was little I though it was just his personality being silly.  It didnÂ’t happen 100% of the time so I didnÂ’t worry about it.

What happens is he clenches his fists and grimaces his face and shakes, much in the way you would if you were straining to lift something heavy.  It lasts 10-20 seconds.

Today I had to wake him up a bit early and take him to the baby sitters so I gave him a sippy cup with juice for the car ride.  When I got there and began taking him out of the car seat he began to have one of these ‘episodesÂ’.  This one lasted probably a solid minute or more.  Even his lower lip seemed to be quivering during it, and I couldnÂ’t break is concentration from it , so I donÂ’t think he was purposefully do it.  He is 22 months old.

Does this sound like a seizure?  Can they be food induced?  What do you think it is?  What should I do?

Bill,

There are a lot of 'if-ies' with all that but the best thing I can recommened right off is to schedule an appointment to take your son into a pediatric doctor. Explain everything, and anything else, about what you've said here.

If there are any other parents on here who might have had the same, or similiar reactions, we all would sure like to hear about them.

Hang on tight. And please let us know how things continue onward.

Hi,

I would definitely make an appointment, in the meantime I would start keeping a log of what he has eaten and when he has this reaction.  If it seems to be that he reacts only to certain things you can try removing them from his diet for awhile and see what happens.  Good luck!

Is he getting enough sleep. When I have to get up early, I get a seizure. I dont think it has to do with eating. It could be that he is getting up to early, and happens to have the seizure right while he is eating. Get him to take his meds before he gets out of bed. Or try waking him up later. If you cant do that, send him to bed earlier and see if that helps.http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/EpilepsyApproach/Lisa
