The importance of educating the general public about epilepsy

Fri, 10/17/2014 - 09:13

This is a great place for people to get advice and connect with others who have epilepsy. Also, it is very important to educate not only friends and family of those living with epilepsy, but also the general public. For example, if someone had a seizure in a public space, would others know what to do to help that person? I am wondering if this may be one of the concerns that people living with epilepsy have?

It can be important since

It can be important since many people have and know only what they have been told or seen. Also the stigma has been out for over 2 thousand yeayrs. When I was diagnosed there were no forums. The place you went for information was teh library. The neurologists back then had not gone into specialities. I wrote an essay which I had to read to my english class and all the teachers classes. The sciene teacher heard about it and I gave it to his classes. The vice princable heard me giving it and I had to read it to the ntire student body at the next assembly. I handed the essay to the vice princable who had it read to the student body 2-3 times a year. It was still being used 5-6 years later. SO yes it is a good thing to inform the public. How it is done is different in different areas. Students can learn and that might help kids in school. If given at companies it can help others since they have friends or family members who might have epilepsy without knowing it. Hey absence seizures look like someone day dreaming. Simple partial seizures can be had without a teacher knowing what is happening.
