Hello, I need some advice regarding my child who has epilepsy

Thu, 02/03/2005 - 21:03
Hello, I'm 23 years old, a single mom and I have a 3 year old who was diagnosed with epilepsy at the age of 4 months. For the past 2 weeks I have had the most awful trouble with her in regard to her sleep patterns. She is fighting both me and her daycare provider tooth and nail about going to sleep although you can see she is exhausted. I've also noticed (and it may be coincidental) that she has seizures more often when she is over-tired. Can ANYONE offer me some advice? Thanks in Advance.

Thank you so much for responding to my cry for help Amy! My name is Kelena and my daughters name is Ondai. She is currently taking phenobarbital and trileptal. She was doing well for a while when we first introduced the trileptal but now the sleeplessness has returned. I will ask her neurologist about the b6. Thanks so much again. If i have any other concerns i will probably ask you about them!

Kelena,I read your initial entry. Children tend to have more seizures when they are tired (or sick). Also - sleep is often a problem for children with seizure disorders. Have they done a sleep eeg to see if your little one is having seizures while she sleeps? That's what we found was happening with our son (he is now 3). Now that he has the proper medication, he usually sleeps through the night. We have also used vitamin B6. The jury is still out on the results. You should try it. However, too much B6 can be harmful and cause nerve damage. Ask your physician. But - for an infant like yours, 1/2 tablet (crushed) and disolved into a bottle once a day is probably what he/she will tell you to try (you can get B6 vitamins over the counter at the drug store). Keep us posted,AmyQ
