Girlfriend with Epilepsy

Sun, 02/20/2011 - 23:24
Hey Everybody, Being a first time user on this site, and knowing practically nothing about epilepsy with the exception of basic first aid, I really need some help. I'm 17 yrs old, and my girlfriend (15) has had epilepsy for a very long time (diagnosed when she was little). Mostly all of her seizures are stress triggered (none have been substance related), but as of recently (about 2 years) her seizures have been longer and longer (in terms of duration). We have been together for about a month, and I love her very dearly and I want to be by her side and stand with her to face this. However, her most recent seizure has triggered a short-term memory loss? She doesn't know who I am...she remembers little things that we did together, but she still doesn't know me. She barely recognized my voice, and seeing pictures of me slowly brings back memories. Pretty much, I'm in full panic mode and I don't know what to do. (Am I supposed to start our relationship over? Start from the beginning?) Please help. --AD

Daniel-

Hey Ihave had seizures since I was 9 and rarely had memory problems. Reading this, I was thinking you could make a scrapbook or even a video of the things you both have done together. To remind her who you are and how yshe feels about you. This is a very hard type of epilepsy to cope with, especially with a partner. It's a great thing that you wantto her help her through this. Some people just walk away and say "F*** It". I hope you can help her and be very happy together. You're doing a great thing and I have alot of respect for you. Keep it up, I hope this helps.
