Episodic memory loss

Sun, 07/07/2013 - 15:29
I have read on here a post from someone (sorry, cant remember who) who was talking about episodic memory loss and describing it. What he was describing is exactly what my husband has. He has frontal temporal epilepsy following a road accident 18 years ago and has complained about problems with his memory ever since, but the memory tests come back as OK. It seems that he has only been tested for short-term and long-term memory loss though. What I wondered was, does any one know if you can get problems with Episodic memory loss, even if you have no other problems with memory?

I already had controlled seizures since '76, but then had a severe concussion in '84. In '95, my seizures became uncontrolled. I was put on a cocktail of several different AEDs to try to bring my seizures under control. Lamictal, Dilantin, Clonazepam and Vimpat. I think it was a combination of the seizures and possibly the AEDs that caused my memory loss. Mine is only long-term. However, there are a lot of events I should remember clearly, that are gone. Can you explain what you mean by episodic memory loss? Is this memory loss that occurs for a while, then is remembered again? We ALL forget things once in a while, then remember them.

Hi Episodic memory loss is where you can remember names, adresses, what day it is, what the capital of France is, who the president is etc - ie facts and figures, but you have trouble remembering things you have said, conversations that you have had, things that you have done, people you have met, places you have been to etc - ie those memories personal to you.  Hubby usually looses it after a couple of hours and once its gone - its gone and cannot be retrieved.
