8 year old boy suffering inattentiveness / memory loss

Sun, 11/28/2004 - 14:07

Hi,

A relative of mine has a child of 8 years old. About 12 weeks ago he suffered a minor head injury whilst playing at school. He was taken to hospital and released.

Since then, we have become concerned about some strange behaviours. His doctor has made an appointment to see a specialist in 3 months time, but his view is that the problem is eating related. However the symptoms coincided with the injury.

The symptoms occur relatively infrequently, but last all day when they occur. He will be asked to go and put his school uniform on, and will be found in bed in his pajamas (having changed from his normal day clothes). Or he will be at school and will get his food, then forget to eat and rejoin the queue. On one occasion he walked home from school on his own, believing that school was finished for the day (10 minutes after it started). When confronted, he appears unusually compliant and seems confused. He's normally quite a boisterous boy, but if you tell him to do something during one of these episodes, he will do it without argument (or he will do something, but not what you asked). It is clear to me that this is not simple disobedience - there is an issue of memory loss or confusion.

Could this be some form of epilepsy ? We have noticed no other symptoms (eye flicking etc).

James.

It seems as if, by what you stated, that there could be something neurological going on.  I would think, although not by any means qualified, that he should have an EEG as soon as possible.   By lasting such a long time it could be some kind of constant activity that the EEG would/should pick up.  He should also have a MRI.  If it is, it would probably fall under the category of complex partial seizures.  I have heard of people having episodes like that and if it is, and if it is lasting all day, than I would seek help asap.  Have them check for bed wetting also.

Hi

what you are describing do not sound typical to me at all - even for epilepsy.  i'm wondering if it was from the head injury; even minor ones can make a major difference.  i would strongly encourage you to take him either back to the doctor, or to a different one. sometimes doctors miss things or don't think about something - they are human as well.

wishing u well
