Is there such a thing?

Fri, 05/23/2014 - 00:16

Hi I am new here. My son(almost 3) has been recently diagonosed with Epilepsy. His first seizure(grad mal) was on April 2 2014 and he has had 9 more since. he started med and so far only time will tell, but I'm hopeful. Just in the past days though I have noticed him with these random spurts, almost like he is having a seizure that last for 1-3 seconds and he is standing. To me its like he is being startled, but without anything to startle him. His hands kinda fling out quick and his eye look focused. Then as quickly as it happens it stops. Is this possibly  some sort of different seizure? can you even have more than one type of seizure?? TIA

Yes, one can have more than one seizure type. And seizures can change over time. Was your son diagnosed with generalized or focal epilepsy? Because focal epilepsy can secondarily generalize but there are also syndromes that have more than one type of seizure, and sometimes the initial diagnosis is made on incomplete info and needs to change. Can you get this behavior recorded? If you don't already track odd occurrances, please start.  I know I spend a fair amount of interaction with neurology on the phone and I 'm sure you can call you son's neuro with followup questions/observations to make sure any issues get addressed.  Don't be shy about following up when your gut says something isn't right.

Depending on the type of

Depending on the type of epilepsy and the type of seizures he has. Yes those things do happen. I could also be the newer medications stopping the sizure right after it starts. Newer medication are being designed to stop seizures. All a seizure is is "An electrical impulse going off wrong in the brain causing a chain reaction. The electrical impulse going off wrong in the brain (start of a seizure) chain reaction (the seizure) the seizure lasts as long as it takes for the chain reaction to finish. Have you ever set dominoes up next to each other and tapped the first? The first falls into the next until they all fall. Now what would happen if your finger was between the 4+5th dominope? Tap the first (start of the chain reaction, Dominoes fall until they hit your finger (finger is medication) Tha chain reaction is stopped.  The medication I am currently on has shortened the time in the seizures I was having. Those seizures used to be 45 seconds to 2 minutes. The time to focus (get back to normal was 15-45 minutes. The seizures now are a few seconds and the focus time is about the same. I can have a seizure in a crowd of people and 99% of the peope around me would know nothing about the seizure. Partial seizures.  Depending on his diagnosis and the types of epilepsy he has could also mean he can have several kinds of seizures.  As for having different types of seizures YES and a person can have more then 1 type of epilepsy. I was diagnosed long before neurologists started into their specialities. My diagnosis was Grand Nal, Petite Mal and Focal motor epilepsy. The worst, the slightest and Focal seizures can vary. They start in one area of hte brain which effects the other side of the body. With me the scar tissue is on the left lobes of my brain which controls my right side. My right hand is affected with those seizures. If the seizure generalizes which they can do then my right hand would rise up once it reaches ahoulder lever I would go into a convulsive seizure which can and do look just like a grand mal. The difference is I do not lose conciousness while in those. I would sugegst yo uget the my epilepsy diary it can be found on this site. Set your mouse on the get help don't click just hover there. There will be many things come up while your mouse hovers there. The My Epilepsy Diary will be the second thing down on the right side of the screen. Watch the video because it tels you how to use it and how to input your sons information in. There is a note pad on each day which is where you need to note things like Mereloaded told you to list, Anything that is not normal. You can give his neurologist permission to pull it up so he can view it. By doing that he can use the graphs and other iformation He can read you notes, All of that information can be used and by doing that he can come up with medications, dosages and other procedures to help control his seizures As mereloaded posted a lot of things can be done over the phone,  Also understand if he hasn't had his dosage changed and he has only been opn meds for a short time then his dosage may need to be adjusted. As the body changes and he grows dosages need adjusting. I know my dosages were changed 4-5 times in less then 2 years. I grew like a weed when I went into my teen years. Went from 4'8" and 80 bls to 135 anf 135 lbs. We always bought jeans that were 2-3 sizes too big but they were still ancke waders.withen 6 months. I hope this helps and he gets seizure free.Joe

I have had seizures for 12 years grand mal, myoclonic, startle...I finally found the right combo of medicine and haven't had a seizure since December :)The medicine is phenobarbital and clonazepam. I should mention I also have lupus and I am very allergic to most anti epileptic medicine. I'm not saying this is for everyone but it has been a God send for me Good luck to everyone who is still looking for some type of control. God bless
