Stomach miagranes and epilepsy

Sat, 04/21/2012 - 12:43
My son was diagnosed with epilepsy at the age of 4.  He has been on several different medications with no relief.  He is currently only taking lacimatel.  He started having severe stomach aches several years ago which the dr. diagnosed as stomach miagrans caused by his seizures.  They quit for a while but are now back.  Does anyone have additional information about these stomach miagranes and how they relate to his epilepsy?

Hello. I am going to tell you about my experiences with seizures.

I am a 40 yr. old woman who started to have seizures in my sleep 2 years ago. I went to dr.s and they did all the tests, CT scan, EEG, and MRI. All came back negative. I was put on Dilantin 100 mg 3xaday. The meds were too much and it was dropped to 2xaday. I was never diagnosed by the dr.s or told why I am having seizures or what type they were. I was just told I had a seizure disorder. After my own research and having my boyfriend witness seeing me have a seizure in my sleep, we came to the conclusion that I have grand mal seizures and the type of seizure disorder we think I have is Nocturnal Seizure Disorder. These are grand mal seizures that only happen when the person is asleep. I have all the after effects of gm seiz. tongue bitten, peed pants, weak legs and extreme headache and extreme nausea. I have auras as well, 4 types I have experienced, but they do not always lead to a seiz. I have the thought auara, where the thought "you're going to have a seizure tonight" pops in my head before I go to bed and later that night I have a seizure. I have the icky feeling aura. Where this icky feeling like a wave of heat comes over me. My vision gets dim and tunnel vision, my hearing goes dim, and a wave of ickiness goes from my head down my body to my feet. I look at my arms and hands and they do not seem to belong to me. I also have the smell aura, where I smell things that are not there. I have smelled 2 smells with this aura type. I have smelled the distinct smell of weed, and the smell of something cooking, like spaghetti. I have also felt a nauseated feeling aura. Where I felt sick like deep down in my stomach, and later that night I had 2 seiz. 2 hrs. apart.

Before I had my first seiz. 2 years ago, about 5-10 times a month, I would wake up and feel like I had the stomach flu. I would be nauseated but yet still be hungry. I also felt really tired during those times. My boyfriend and I looked on the net and found a type of seizure disorder called Abdominal Epilepsy. This is a digestive disorder that affects children mostly. The child can feel sick with a stomach flu one day and another day feel really tired. Those are the exact same feelings I always felt. So I figured I was having seiz. those times but they were not strong yet.

I really don't know anything about stomach migraines but I do know that the stomach is like the second brain and can affect how we feel physically and mentally. If someone has stomach problems, that can lead to health problems like seizures.

After taking my seiz. meds for 2 yrs. I have noticed that my memory has gotten bad. I have trouble remembering things and I say the wrong words for things. I really don't think drs. know that much about seiz. and I think the meds they give people to treat seiz. do more harm than good. Seizure meds can cause memory loss and some meds are worse than others. Tegretol is a bad med.

Right now I have stopped taking my seiz. meds. I am unemployed with no health insurance and there is no help I can get for seeing dr.s or paying for my meds. I had my last seizure on March 20,2012. It has been 14 days I have been without my meds and I have not had a seizure yet. But I have had auras constantly and I have headaches almost daily. Any ways I don't think my seiz. are like other peoples. I only have them in my sleep and I have 1 maybe 2 every 3-5 months.

Well I hope I helped you with some info. All I can tell you is to talk to your dr. and keep asking questions. And do your own research about seizures and epilepsy. Dr.s do not know everything and many times they can be wrong. One more thing, if your son has grand mal seiz. have a prolactin test done because that is the only test that can diagnose a grand mal seiz.

Take care.
