I wonder if I actually have epilepsy....

Sun, 05/14/2017 - 22:15
So I was diagnosed with epilepsy based off of the only seizure I've ever had because of the fact that I had a bad head injury about 10 years ago. But the night (well technically morning, 3 am) that I had the seizure, during the day I worked 12 hours and had 2 big Java monster energy drinks and I was only working on about 5 hours of sleep to begin with and was awake for about 22 hours at the time the seizure occurred. The doctor was quick to assume that it must be epilepsy because of the head injury many years prior. I was put on Dilantin after the injury as a precautionary measure and I requested to be taken off of it about a year later because it made me feel like sh** and I didn't have a seizure it anything until many years later. I had no issues with coffee or lack of sleep it anything until that night. So I still wonder if I am actually epileptic or it's just based on assumptions by the neurologists.

I didn't have my first grand

I didn't have my first grand Mal seizure until I was 29. I had been sleeping only 3-4 hours a night for 2 weeks. They diagnosed me with Juvenile Myoclonic Epilepsy and pumped me with Dilantin which gave me a near death side effect. Now I have about 2-3 seizures a year and have switched medications 4 times. I am wondering if my dependency for the meds have given me the continued diagnosis.

ok Santana each person has

ok Santana each person has their own thresholds fo pain or everything else and yes seizures have thresholds. Did the doctors do any tests before your diagnosis? In your head injury were you knocked out even for a few seconds? There are reasons for these questions. Tests can show abnormalities which can cause an electrical impulse to hit wrong in your brain which causes a chain reaction. (the seizure). Now a head injury where the person loses consciousness can cause bleeding. That bleeding on the brain if not taken care of will leave scar tissue. That scar tissue can cause electrical impulses to hit wrong in the brain. In a fall when I was about 7 I hit my head on the left side and slammed my mouth into a metal rail knocking out 4 teeth and cutting my tongue and the inside of my jaw.  That is what caused my epilepsy. There were no CT scans back in the 50's. The doctors were more worried about the 32-36 stiches they put in my mouth and if my teeth would grow back in right. So yes a head injury can cause epilepsy
