i have a 12 yr old son that has been taking homeopathic medication for night terrors. he wakes screaming, sweating heart racing pupils fixed yet recalls nothing afterwards. i caught him once just about to jump out of his bedroom window, the medication he has been taking have made things slightly better but only just. last night i watched him sleeping and the left side of his body was jerking like a spasm movement. as a baby he suffered with convulsions and was under a neurologist as his body jerked during his sleep. the neurologist dicharged him and said they did not know the cause can any one tell me if they believe that my son is suffering with night time epilepsey and if so how can i get him diagnosed.

Hi My sympathies for you and your son. I am not a medical professsional but a person with epilepsy. From what you explained of the neurologist who discharged your son because they didn't know the cause, it sounds like an incompetent excuse to not be bothered. Most cases of epilepsy are of unknown origin. Obviously, there is something wrong with your son's health. Perhaps this is a matter of putting up some assertive arguments to get the doctor to treat your son's symptoms. You might consider using a seizure diary to write down times, observations, etc. of what is happening with your son on a regular basis so you have something to back up your argument. I wish you luck!

Sounds like a sleep study or 24 hour vEEG is needed to figure out what is happening when he falls asleep. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Check out my chart of alternative epilepsy treatments.

I agree with Bernard

I jerk a lot in my sleep and its mostly my left side and its not seizure activity. Obviously the possibility of a seizure needs to be looked into and you need to see a neurologist who should eventually do a sleep study or a lengthy vEEG. They often start out with a 20min-60min EEG but this often misses epilepsy. It's also possible that he as a sleep disorder AND epilepsy, so obviously it would be ideal to have both of these events captured on the video EEG.
