Growth Spurts and Seizures?

Mon, 06/10/2013 - 05:28
HI all, My sons has had seizures since he was 14. He is now 16 and over the past few years has had about 12 episodes in all. They all happened when he was sleeping and after a few days we would notice he had grown. Last week he had 2 seizures during the day with 2 hours between each one. When he was measured on the 25th June he as exactly 6ft. Yesterday when we measured him he was 6ft 1in. We are off to the doctor this afternoon so will defo get that checked but even is we have got the measurement wrong he has definitely grown half an inch..which in a week to me seems a lot. He is not currently taking any medication but now may have to consider it as we were coping with them being during the night. Does anyone have any real facts about seizures and growth spurts? He had full tonic clonic seizures when they happen. Any ideas and advice would be appreciated. A one confused parent.

Puberty can have an effect on seizure control.  What surprises me is that if he's still experiencing seiuzures why he's not on any anti-seizure medication.  His increase in seizures might not necessarily be a result of his growing or that he's two years older but it could mean that his seizures are getting to the point that they're just occuring more frequently.  There could be other medical reasons for an increase in seizures.

I think it would benefit your son to be seen by a neurologist.  Seizures that occur at night or even during the day can cause injury.  I don't know if your son drives but that is another deciding factor to see a neurologist for seizure control.

Hope things work out.
