Epilepsy Ads Using Scare To Educate "It's Wrong"

Wed, 03/04/2009 - 09:48

Does anyone out there disagree with the Ads on tv about epilepsy? I am trying to find a job currently and if I were an employer or a coworker and heard this ad I would think twice before hiring a person with epilepsy or if I were that coworker it would scare the willy out of me.

It is using scare tactics to educate people about epilepsy, but people I speak to about this ad says they are more afraid of it than they were before. Stop this ad. "I had a son with epilepsy and he died." "A seisuze can happen anytime." Please more people have seizure and live than those that die.

I couldn't take swimming in highschool because no teacher would take responiability for me untill a teacher came around in my senior year and let me take swimming she had a family member with epilepsy. People with epilepsy live very successfull and good lives. Don't make it sound like we are going to die any time so beware!!.

In regards to working: Seizure Disorder has "stigma" attached and a lot of employers do consider it a possible "hazard" to hire someone with a known seizure disorder, whether controlled on meds for years or not.

So, without the ads - which I myself haven't seen - it's a toss up as to whether one discloses to a potential employer his or her disorder or discloses after they are hired.

I disclosed after I was hired at my last employer and when it came time to lay folks off at my particular site... guess who the only employee laid off from my particular site was?

I also think that the tragedy with John Travolta's son passing away and the stories that came out about his possibly having a seizure disorder causing his death has also put a 'fear spin" on things as well..
