IS THIS A DROP SEIZURE

Sun, 01/20/2008 - 00:04

SOMETHING HAPPENED TO ME ABOUT A MONTH AGO THAT STILL WORRIES ME AND IS STILL CAUSING ME PAIN PROBLEMS. I WAS WALKING, WHEN INSTANTLY I DROPPED. WHAT I FELT PRECISELY WHEN IT HAPPENED IS THAT I HAD NO MUSCLES IN MY LEGS, THE JOINTS WERE TRYING TO HOLD ME UP, AND I WAS ON THE FLOOR. THERE WAS SOMEONE HERE AND I TOLD HER TO LEAVE, I WAS EMBARRASSED. SHE SAID, IT LOOKS LIKE YOU HAVE CEREBRAL PALSY. THE JOINTS FELT LIKE THEY WERE STICKING WAY OUT, TO THE RIGHT OF MY RIGHT LEG. SHE CONFIRMED THAT THE NEXT TIME I SAW HER.

AFTER I DROPPED TO THE GROUND, I REMEMBER NOTHING AFTER THAT, AFTER SHE LEFT AND THAT WAS A BLUR, LIKE A LESSER VERSION OF BEING POSTICTAL. THE NEXT THING I REMEMBER, I WAS NOT IN MY LIVING ROOM, BUT IN MY BED, FEELING LIKE THERE WAS A VERY HEAVY WEIGHT ON MY CHEST, I WAS HAVING TROUBLE BREATHING AND JUST BAM, IT STOPPED. I LOOKED UP 'DROP SEIZURES', AND IT SOUNDED LIKE WHAT HAPPENED TO ME, BUT NOTHING ABOUT WHAT HAPPENED AFTER I DROPPED TO THE FLOOR. IN FACT, IT SAID THAT NOTHING ELSE HAPPENED. I AM CONFUSED AS TO WHAT THAT WAS. THE PAIN IN MY HIP AND JOINT, AND MY KNEE IS STILL THERE. I WOULD APPRECIATE ANY INPUT I CAN GET. THANKS, JAN

Sudden falls or loss of

Sudden falls or loss of muscle tone and change in consciousness can be caused by many things.  While a drop seizure can be one of the causes, drop seizures are usually very brief. Here's a link to info about drop seizures.

Other medical problems can cause loss of consciousness and falls so it's wise to have this checked out by a doctor, especially if there are other problems of pain or breathing difficulties.

THANKS EPI, I DID READ WHAT WAS SAID ABOUT DROP SEIZURES. I JUST HOPED THIS WAS MAYBE AN ATYPICAL DROP SEIZURE, RATHER THAN ADD ANOTHER DISEASE TO THE MIX OF DISEASES I ALL READY HAVE. I REALLY THOUGHT THAT SINCE I HAD NO MEMORY OF WHAT HAPPENED, IT WAS A SEIZURE. THAT SOUNDS BETTER THAN FINDING OUT I HAVE M.D.  OR C. P.  I HAVE AN APPOINTMENT ONE WEEK FROM TODAY WITH A NEURO WHO SPECIALIZED IN BRAIN/EAR CONNECTION, BUT I DON'T WANT TO GO. OH, BOTHER! BLESSINGS, I HOPE ALL IS WELL WITH YOU. JAN

Hi Jan,

I hope you are ok and your neuro will get some answers soon for you.  At this stage until you are diagnosed, it could be alot of things, but to me it sounds like myoclonic epilepsy.  The fall you described was so like my seizures.  Take care, and my thoughts are with you.  Let us know how you get on.

Hugs, Wyn
