Ambulatory EEG - Stop medicine beforehand? What if inconclusive?

Thu, 01/26/2006 - 18:02
Dr. scheduling me for Ambulatory EEG. I forgot to ask if I need to stop taking the medicine beforehand - I take Tegretol to control symptoms. Also, he sounded like if this test came out negative he was going to say I don't have simple partial epilepsy. I question whether one could say that if one test is negative, boom you don't have it. I know of a few people who have neurological symptoms and their tests came out inconclusive. What do you think? I could really use some help here. Elsea

Hi Elsea, I just had my 4th ambulatory EEG last week, and they did not have me stop or reduce my meds. A normal EEG does not necessarily mean you do not have epilepsy. It only means that you do not have epileptiform discharges occuring while you are on the EEG. I'm not sure what kind of doctor you are seeing, but I would highly recommend that you see an epileptologist (neuro who specializes in epilepsy). One negative EEG should not be the basis used for a conclusive diagnosis. Hi Elsea, Changing meds during EEG testing should be done only with doctor's advice. Usually that is done when a person is in a hospital setting, but sometimes doses may be adjusted or lowered in very specific situations. For very general info on the ambulatory EEG testing, take a look at the home page here - hope it helps and good luck! http://www.epilepsy.com/epilepsy/eeg_ambulatory.html Epilepsy.com Resource Specialist
