Alcohol abuse and epilepsy...Help

Mon, 05/29/2017 - 15:49
My brother was diagnosed with epilepsy at 9yrs old. He is now 31. In the last year I've noticed that he's been drinking every night until he finally passes out. Different doctors say different things. His seizures have also increased, creating a pattern of one month seizure free and then 3 seizures a month every 7 days. Does the alcohol make his medication less effective? How dangerous is it for an epileptic to be drinking so much?

It depends on the meds. Ask the doctor if alcohol effects the meds hes currently on. Even if it dosent effect his meds drinking like that can effect his seizures. Big triggers are a lack of sleep and stress. When your drunk your not getting good quality of sleep which can cause siezures. And if hes drinking every night, he probably has a lot on his mind stressing him out.
