The reason varies. My reason was so that docs could record seizures. The injected a dye during a seizure to see where the focal point was, and determine whether or not I was a surgery candidate. Heather :)

Hi widhrt13, Here is some info from http://www.epilepsy.com/epilepsy/testing_videoeeg.html "Video-EEG is most helpful in determining whether seizures with unusual features are actually epilepsy, identifying the type of seizures, and pinpointing the region of the brain where seizures begin. Locating the region precisely is essential if epilepsy surgery is being considered." So, as you read, VEEGs are important via determining actual epilepsy (in some where it's difficult with a regular EEG) and the precise area of the brain affected, since physicians need to know specifically what type of E they are treating before prescribing meds or gauging the possiblity of surgery. I never had a VEEG until just before surgery. They didn't exist when I began having seizures, but, in retrospect, I now realize it was luckly that (when a young child) I had a seizure in my neurologist's office = how he knew exactly. ~sol
