Tonsilitis not epilepsy?? Desperate!!

Sun, 02/12/2017 - 03:52
Hello My daughter has recently been diagnosed with epilepsy ... but i am convinced its her enlarged tonsils causing the seizures and not epilepsy ... she has had 5 chronic tonic seizures in 3 months and all have been while she is eating food ... the first happened in november after she had a bad chase of tonsilitis one of her tonsils remained enlarged and is blocking one side of her airway ... she then didnt have another seizure till january and again she was eating when this happened ... shes had an eeg and the only time anything abnormal showed up was when they got her to hyperventilate her o2 saturation went down to 85% and she was gasping for breathe and the drs declared she had an absent seizure ... the dr reckons that its an abnormal occurance that she just happened to be eating when she had all 5 seizures?? She has never had one any other time she is 7 years old and the seizures only started after the enlarged tonsils appeared ... i am fighting to get my daughters tonsils taken out and am currently asking for time ... the dr got very offended and demanded i get a second opinion as i cleaerly didnt think he had the right medical background ... i just want to be 1000 percent sure this is epilepsy and not her tonsils before we put her on life changing medication please can anyone help me or advise me on this i am desperate ... thank you for reading this.

My daughter had her first

My daughter had her first ever seizures last December, they were so bad she had to go to ER to get them to slow down from 2 every 10 minutes to 1 per hour, the violent type.  In a few days, they relented to small tremors.   The ER neurologist diagnosed them as non-epileptic, which I agreed because she could respond to me during the seizures, then he said seek consoling.  Not helpful. My daughter had already been diagnosed with a list of horrible genetic syndromes, so we ignored his suggestion and visited her doctor at the Mayo Clinic.  Her medications used to control the symptoms of her already diagnosed syndromes impact her immune system negatively.  For months leading up to the first seizure, she had been fighting chronic infections including urinary, lung and tonsillitis and had been on a half dozen rounds of antibiotics for 3 months to fight them.   Mayo Clinic conclusion is removal of the tonsils and an immune booster treatment should eliminate the seizures.   She's scheduled for surgery in June to work around school conflicts.  During this waiting period, we've noticed the seizure activity increases as her tonsils swell and decreases as they get better. Caution, most doctors suck when it comes to complicated health issues, they're guessing.  Her specialist is in Arizona, we don't live in Arizona.  Sometimes you'll have to work for the right answers, and they don't always come conveniently or without significant expense.

Hi Alison, can you please describe the seizures your son had? I have exactly the same feeling about my son and I am not sure if I should go ahead and ask to remove those tonsils... Thank you - Jakub...
