Tell me about your EMU experience, please!

Sat, 06/20/2015 - 13:55

I'm going to an EMU Monday morning and I feel like I'm walking into battlefield with anchors strapped to my feet because I KNOW what's going to happen! I'm petrified I'm gonna wake up and have no idea who I am, where I'm at, who anyone is cuz that happens everytime I wake up from a seizure... Please tell me about your experience to help me to know what to expect. I've read things online but there's no personal experiences to base off of.

Please relax and you will be

Please relax and you will be fine. I have been thru testing and it isn't as diffacult as you seem to think it is.. The ENU is set up in a hospital where you are hooked up to a EEG and are being videoed. While in the last EMU I was allowed to have friends and family come in and watch movies. we played games and talked. The menu was ok. A friend brought me something else the next day but I had no problems. In some there are rooms used for childres where the parents can stay there and keep an eye on things too. I am an adult but Doc kows who I would want there if something goes wrong so the recliner would lay back and they stayed there one night. After the time period I was let out and told to go to a certain room where doc was at. Yup he was there looking at everything and he did discuss things. The procedure he was thinking about wouldn't work for me but at least he was able to varify the diagnosis I was given back in 1964. He followed it up with the neurologists were correct but the scar tissue was not in just the lower left lobe of my brain. He also stated the hemmorage that caused the scar tissue wasn't before or after birth but between 6-8 YOA.  In other words relax the units can help get more information about procedures that can be done to help get you seizure free What the neurologist is doing by putting you in the EMU he is wanting more infornation and the unit can help. The EEG is constant running 24/7. The other reason to relax is if you do have a seizure you are going to be with nurses, doctors and others who know what to do if the seizure lasts too long. They have rescue medis available and yes you will be given one to stop the seizure. before you leave they will also give you a medication to get your levels back to theraputic levels. You can start taqking your nedications again unless the neurologist changes them I hope this helps and you get the assistance you need...... Please come back and let us know how things went Joe
