Sleep-deprived EEG

Wed, 09/19/2007 - 22:13
Hello, I'm sorry if this is in the wrong place or there are already topics about this. I just came across this website tonight on Google, and thought it would be the best place to ask my questions. I am set to have my first ever sleep-deprived EEG (well, first EEG at all) a week from tomorrow after having 2 grand mal seizures in my sleep over the last 5 years (including one just over a week ago), and countless partial seizures, so we are hoping this will confirm whether or not I have epilepsy. First, I know that I can't have any caffeine the day/night before, but will there be any restrictions as far as what I can eat? Second, I am very uncomfortable sleeping anywhere other than my bedroom (even sleeping in my own living room is nearly impossible), so it's very likely that I won't sleep, so what will happen if I can't sleep during the EEG? Thanks a lot. I'd really appreciate any help I can get. Jenn.

Hi Jenn! I just had my first sleep deprived EEG a couple of weeks ago. They did not give me any restrictions as far as food so I would assume it doesn't matter, but you might check with your neurologist to be sure. I understand not being able to sleep anywhere, it is hard for me too! The way mine was conducted was that for the first twenty minutes or so, the tech had me do specific things, not sleep - For example, she wanted me to take shallow rapid breaths (almost like hyperventilating) for several minutes so I would get lightheaded. Then she had me close my eyes and shined a strobe light at my face for several minutes. Then finally for the last portion of the EEG, she wanted me to relax and attempt to sleep. I never actual fell asleep, but I was able to relax enough that I guess it accomplished what they needed! So, even if you don't think you can sleep, as long as you can close your eyes and ATTEMPT to sleep, I think you'll be fine! Good luck, you'll do great, I'm sure!! : )
