Sleep Apnea causing epilepsy?!

Tue, 01/03/2006 - 23:40
Hello everyone, I hope everybody had a great christmas/new year! I had a question about Sleep Apnea causing epi. on the day after christmas I had another tonic clonic which was so violent that I dislocated my right arm, anyway, when I went to see my GP about it all, he suggested I go to a sleep clinic to see if I have Sleep Apnea. I know that lack of sleep can trig sometimes, but my doc seems to believe that my epi could be caused by Sleep Apnea. Has anyone else heard of this? I've always had trouble sleeping, since infency, but I never thought much of it, and now they tell me that I have an abnormally narrow airway, which probably means Sleep Apnea, which might have caused my epi!!!!!!!!! If anyone knows anything about this please give me more info, it would be much appriciated!

You probably already have answers at this point, but that sounds like orthostatic hypotension. When you're sitting or laying down and stand up quickly, you can get a sudden drop in blood pressure and pass out. Do you ever get dizzy if you get up or out of bed too fast?

I was diagnosed w/ sleep apnea in 1996 and have been using a bi-pap ever since. I was having at least 60 apneas a night including central apneas. I know this much. When I don't get enough sleep I tend to have seizures. I can't even sleep w/o bi-pap anymore at all w/o waking up gasping for breath and rapid heart beats.

In Christ alone shall I glory.

I believe sleep apnea can cause epilepsy. My husband has had 3 sleep seizures in the last 5 months. After the 1st one, they did a sleep study and he has moderate to severe OSA. He didnt get the CPAP because he was too stubborn. But after the 2nd seizure, I demanded that he get the machine. Within a day, he felt so much better, no headaches or anything. He had another seizure 3 weeks ago. At the time I had no clue what triggered it. I figured it out a week or so ago. When his seizure started he threw his CPAP mask off and it wasnt blowing air.

A day or so after the seizure, our TV upstairs shut on and off about 3 times and never came back on. So, I bought an outlet tester. Come to find out, the stupid outlet failed and it shut his machine off.

Since we got all the outlets fixed, he hasnt had another seizure.

Our sleep study doctor and neuro doctor have never said straight out that sleep apnea can cause seizures. But I have read that anyone who goes without proper sleep for a long enough period of time, they are prone to a seizure.
