Should I get 2nd opinion?

Thu, 09/17/2015 - 21:16

Hello all,

I am very confused about what I should do. Will try to shorten my story...

As a child, I had a few absence seizures. For the next 25 years, I never had anything that made me think was a seizure, and was not on medication. Several months ago, I had a seizure where I lost consciousness. When the paramedics arrived, they checked and said my blood sugar was in the 60s (this is about an hour after eating a very hearty meal). The ER doc also said she wasn't certain if I experienced an epileptic seizure or one induced by having low blood sugar. I didn't think anything of it.

As time went on, I had other issues and found I had a severe gluten sensitivity along with other food sensitivities. Through routine blood work, my doctor noticed I had a low blood sugar level 2 times. One was an hour after eating. The other was while fasting. I consulted with an endocrinologist...ran tests...determined I have reactive hypoglycemia.

I initiated a discussion with my neurologist, but she didn't want to acknowledge the possible connection between my blood sugar and seizure. She reiterrated the fact that my MRI was excellent, but they saw abnormal activity in my EEG. I'm not certain about reactive hypoglycemia, but I do know "regular" hypoglycemia from fasting can affect the reading of the EEG.

If I need to stay on the medicine because I have an epileptic seizure disorder, then sobeit. On the other hand, if the seizure I had several months ago was due to a drop in blood sugar, then I'm not certain the medicine is warranted.

One part of me feels like I should get a second opinion, while the other feels like I may not ever find out anything else. I'm usually very decisive, but I really can't make heads or tails of this one.

I'd appreciate any thoughts on this. Thank you.
