Precocious Puberty & Hormone Treatment

Tue, 10/13/2015 - 09:22

Hello, my daughter is 8 and was diagnosed with complex partial epilepsy about a year and a half ago after having some episodes and a positive EEG.

She is taking Keppra but still had seizures once every 4-8 weeks. In addition, she would have some absence episodes a few days coming up to a regular seizure.
A few months ago we were also told she had started the pre-puberty process and was put on a hormone treatment to stop/delay this process.

Since starting on the injections, she is much better form and has had no absence or regular seizures. The neurologist has told us the treatment was going to have no impact but we can see it’s having a positive impact on controlling her epilepsy.

It is early days for us to understand if the hormone treatment is really responsible for the improvement on seizure control, we think so at this point, I’m wondering if anybody has any experience in a similar situation, I could not find any relevant information online. She has had a normal MRI also checking the pituitary gland.

Many thanks, Maria

MariaA seizure is a seizure

MariaA seizure is a seizure be it a partial, absence or grand mal. All are seizures. The medication she is taking is becoming the go to medication for seizure control. Now you do need to make sure she takes her meds like the prescription says. If 2 times a day then those times are morning and night. Those times are also 12 hours apart. Any changes in the body can affect her medications. Weight gain, hormonal changes can affect medications. Changing from a kid to a teen is enough.

Hi Joe, thanks, she is taking

Hi Joe, thanks, she is taking her meds as prescribed. I know Keppra is meant to work miracles for a lot of people but it was not fully controlling my daughter's seizures. Only when she started on the hormone treatment they seem to have stopped.
