new diagnosis for my husband, need feedback

Fri, 03/07/2008 - 12:35
my husband has had epilepsy for years, and it's only been somewhat controled by medications. Alot of medications.  Now they're telling me it's creating a hole in his brain, in the front temperal lobe, and he's been hospitalized several times for suicide attempts, spontaneous outbursts of rage, and this is not the man I know him to be.  He was just admitted to a psychiatric hospital again, and they don't seem to be looking into a solution.  I am so frustrated, and am tired of all them doing is giving him more medications.  PLEASE HELP.

I'm sorry to hear you are going though such a hard time. I'm not sure what you mean by that the seizures are causing a hole in his brain.

I think the best thing to do is to try to find other people in your area who are also dealing with epilepsy and can give you some advise for dealing with doctors and which ones to see.

I suggest contacting the epilepsy foundation. You can find their website here.

Did he have brain surgery? My doctor said I have scar tissue. It was really messing with me. He put me on trileptal and it really helped with my moods. However, it affected my sodium level and I had to stop taking it.

Sorry to hear of your husband's situation. Neurological problems can give rise to emotional issues as well as seizures and these may be related or not. It's important to have the right type of help to deal with both.  Make sure that you have help of a neurologist specializing in epilepsy (called an epileptologist) and a neuropsychiatrist. They can work together to sort out what may be due to seizures, brain injury, medicines and consider treatments to address both issues.

Hope this helps!
