Misdiagnosed?

Wed, 12/03/2014 - 11:30

Hi my name is Grace.I was officially diagnosed with benign occipital epilepsy when I was three,I had a bad seizure at a bird park.My mom didn't want to medicate me until I was 6,it got a lot worse then. Now I'm 12,my medication is carbamazepine. I'm thinking I may be misdiagnosed. When I have seizures, there's an aura and it's like TV static and I can't move my eyes back and forth unless i move my head. What makes me think I was misdiagnosed is because my right arm shakes up and down right before the aura. Also since benign occipital epilepsy is more of a childhood form of epilepsy,If that's what I have wouldn't I be wearing out of it?If you have any information I would really appreciate it.

Welcome Grace::At 6 you were diagnosed. You are now 12. You still have seizures.OK  you didn't say if you were tested. If tested you did not say which tests you had. You do not say much other then questioning the diagnosis. I was diagnosed at 13. I had had seizures for about 1 1/2 years without knowing it. I went thru a battery of tests. The doctors never answered my questions. They did talk to my motherand gave her information. They did prescribe medication which I had alredy been taking. All te tests came back normal. However the last test that was done was another EEG, In that EEG I fell asleep and that is when they found abnormalities. They then went back over the other tests and found information they needed. If you had tests fine.Could the diagnosis have been made and it be right? It could. A person can have more then 1 type of epilepsy or one type of seizure. My diagnosis was Grand Mal, Petit Mal and focal motor epilepsy So wher in the picture might I fit? Grand mal seizures are basically tonic-clonic seixures. Petite mal seizures are absence seizures. Focal motor eoopilepsy is basicallt focal seizures. So I can have the worst type of seizure. The slightest type of seizure. With focal seizures they can range from a seizure which looks like a dat dream to a convulsive seizure looking like a grande mal. My cousin was diagnosed with epilepsy and did grow out of it. The kind of epilepsy I do not know. But she is married and been doing well for many years and hasn't had seizures in about 35 years. I do hope this helps and yo uget answers you want and the assistance you need Joe
