Head Injury Followed by Deja Vu, Nausea, Confusion

Mon, 10/13/2014 - 22:47

Hi All,

I was hoping to get feedback from those who have experienced similar symptoms and received proper diagnosis and treatment - thank you so much in advance. Your feedback on this site single handedly armed me with the information to see a neurologist based on my symptoms.

About a week ago I experienced extremely strange episodes of overwhelming deja vu, followed by nausea and extreme confusion. Specifically, I was traveling out of the country at the time, staying at a hotel, when I was struck with deja vu like a ton of bricks - nothing specific but an immense feeling that I had been in that exact place before, immediately followed by intense nausea, and subsequently followed by confusion and disorientation. I chalked it up to jet lag, but the incident happened about an hour later, and the confusion and fogginess increased. It was as if my brain was divided - half of it was thinking rationally and could recall why I was there, what day it was, what I had done the prior day, etc, but the other half was utterly confused as to why I was there. I had a third episode about an hour later, this time outside but consistent with the earlier episodes in which I was struck with an incredibly strong sense of deja vu that made me nauseated and disoriented, and for the rest of the day I just felt really foggy.

I should note that I tripped and fell about three weeks prior, hit my forehead pretty hard on the ground which resulted in a bump, but no immediate or following signs of concussion.

I saw a neurologist this week who thought the incidents were temporal lobe seizures, put me on Keppra and did an EEG and MRI - both of which came back without indicating any issue. Based on some of the threads I've read I'm so grateful that the doctor took my story seriously and took preventative action to prevent further episodes. However, I am concerned that I'm no closer to understanding the root cause of the issue - I wasn't able to get confirmation that my head injury was causing the seizures (the doctor thought it unlikely given that it was a minor injury), if they were epilectic siezures, or if there's another possible issue that I should be looking into.

If anyone can relate to the issue of lack of causality for temporal lobe seizures, could you make any recommendations for how to handle? Would you recommend a second opinion to help me identify a cause? Has anyone been diagnosed with epilepsy seemingly out of the blue with no family history? I'm a female in my early thirties.

Thank you so much!

I have this feeling. Sometimes it can be quite scary. Like I’m reliving a dream. I’m completely able to move and I’m aware of what’s happening around me but it doesn’t stop the feeling. I have had brain surgery a few times before it started happening. I’m on meds for partial seizures/ temporal lobe epilepsy.
