Excessive eye blinking interfering with EEG

Tue, 07/24/2012 - 20:23
I went in for my first EEG today. It was just the awake test with the flashing lights and hyperventilating. Lasted about 20 minutes. You keep your eyes closed the whole time, except in the beginning when she has you open and close them. But at least 7 or 8 times during the test, the lady administering the it told me to stop blinking my eyes. At first, I was just surprised to learn that one can blink while their eyes are closed. I didn't know my eyes were doing anything. I was told this excess blinking will make it very hard if not impossible to read any abnormal activity. Has anyone else had eye blinking problems during the EEG? Were you still able to get valid test results? Anyway, again and again, she had to tell me to stop blinking. Not that I was trying to blink, didn't even notice I was blinking, so after the 3rd or 4th time, it got a bit annoying. I wasn't trying to blink so how could I stop the blinking. I did notice that my right eye kept trying to open. Not all the way, just a little. there was an open door to a room with a light on, and my right eye seemed to open just enough to see the light, so I told her and she shut the door. Apparently, I kept blinking anyway. She talked a lot about the blinking during the test. Explained a couple times that it will make it very hard for them to read the test. Had me look at my toes at one point. She asked me a few times also if I was okay. She wanted to know if I knew I blinked too much, I just told her my eyes had always been fussy. Which is true (fluorescent lights are a nightmare). Basically, she just made it sound like a huge deal that was really uncommon and that it would make it almost impossible for the doctors to see anything on the test other than the blinks. So, of course I'm wondering if it is a big deal, if anyone else has had this blinking happen, and if the test will be ruined by it? P.S. Other than my stomach doing a few back flips after the hyperventilation and the lights, everything felt fine. No sign of my suspected right side only myoclonus attacks or dizzy spells or anything. And no, there's not been any blinking associated with any of the possible "partial seizures" we're investigation.
