Epilepsy or brain tumor?

Fri, 02/03/2012 - 13:35

Hi, everyone! My first time posting here. I've had seizures for about 6 months. Started as a once a month type of thing. But now in January it's been a couple of times a week. They happened during my sleep. I'd wake up with a bloody, painful tongue and would feel very groggy. 2.5 weeks ago I had my first "awake" seizure. I was with a friend who slept over. She mentioned I woke up and drank coffee with her. I suddenly threw the coffee in the air and started gurgling and convulsing. Apparently right before this, I started talking funny. As in, it was a word salad and didn't make sense at all. It lasted about a minute or two and then I fell asleep. I slept for about 12 hours that whole day. I don't remember drinking coffee that morning or even being awake at all. My first memory of that morning was post-seizure.

I was stupid and didn't go to the Dr until two days after. They scheduled for me to see a neurologist. The neurologist ordered two EEG's and an MRI. I've done my EEG's this week and my neurologist mentioned there was a 'abnormality' on my left side of the brain. During my second EEG they asked me to try and fall asleep but because it was daytime and I can't nap to save my life, I wasn't able to fall asleep.

My MRI appt is on feb 13th. What my main worry is is the fact that my neurologist (who has no bedside manners whatsoever) said it could be anything from various types of epilepsy to even a brain tumor. She said it like it was not a big deal. I FREAKED and I'm extremely nervous/anxious waiting for the 13th. So my question is, with these symptoms:

*for about 3 months last year I experienced nausea. Usually it would happen after a night out (so alcohol was consumed) and I'd gag really badly the next day, especially after coffee. But my doctor back then, without really too many tests determined I had mild acid reflux.

*seizures

*for about a month back in May last year I had super bad headaches. They thought it was migraines but migraine meds didn't help. What eventually helped was a massage and Voltaren on my back oddly enough. They did a CT scan anyway in July and it came back clear. Or I assume it did since no one called me back regarding it and my neurologist took a look at it recently.

*my blood tests were good. Nothing unusual showed up.

I'm just incredibly, INSANELY terrified if it is a brain tumor instead of epilepsy. Epilepsy isn't easy to deal with obviously. I could hardly function during some of the days I had a seizure. But brain tumors scare the living hell out of me. The odds are not exactly great of surviving past the first 5 years. I'm a 27-year-old astrophysics student. I'm just so scared and was wondering if anyone can provide some insight, examples or some words of comfort for me. I'd appreciate any input greatly.
